On Saturday, December 6, from 12 to 4 p.m., six homes will be open for the Holiday House Tour, each decorated for the holidays. This house tour, “Getting Inspired for the Holidays,” is centered in the historic village of Sedgwick and is sponsored by the Brooklin Garden Club as a fund-raising event. According to a press release, there will be two traditional New England Capes from the late 1700s and early 1800s; a classic New England colonial, built between 1850 and 1860; an 1870s Victorian, complete with gingerbread detail and stained glass; a shingled craftsman house, built in 2001; and an eclectic country house, built in 1987. Tickets to tour all six homes can be purchased by calling 359-5572, or picked up the day of the tour at any of the homes. A map of the tour can be picked up at Sedgwick Antiques the day of the tour. The snow date is Sunday, December 7. All the homeowners are accomplished collectors, whose found treasures reflect both the character of their homes as well as their individual tastes. One of the houses is decorated to show a Country Christmas. Another, decorated to reflect the family’s Moravian heritage, is one of two homes offering afternoon refreshments. At one of the New England Capes, with its center chimney and keeping room, you’ll find a Christmas tree trimmed with silver ornaments, a life-long collection. The second New England Cape, built in the late 1700s, follows a very different decorating theme. Handmade origami, natural greens, and candles are found throughout this family home. Afternoon refreshments will also be served at this stop on the tour. The final home is the most eclectic on the tour, with its collection of antiques and ethnic baskets, natural holiday decorations, and hand-painted double barn doors, with a Hopper-like city skyline design. All proceeds from the Holiday House Tour will be used to fund the garden club’s annual grant program. Recipients of the 2007-08 grants included Brooklin School, greenhouse material and orchard soil improvements; Brooklin Youth Corps, help expanding an organic vegetable garden; Brooksville Friends and Neighbors, garden materials for the welcome kiosk; Brooksville Elementary School, additions to the Kristen Herrick Memorial Garden; Peninsula Montessori School, nature trail improvements; and the Town of Sedgwick, town office plantings. The garden club’s grant program for next year depends on the success of this Holiday House Tour. The Brooklin Garden Club is grateful for the financial support of the house tour from four local companies: Ellsworth Building Supply, The First, Parker Ridge, and TradeWinds Marketplace. In addition to the local grant program, the club also supports a scholarship fund for area students. Grants are awarded to area students pursuing studies in horticulture, environmental studies, forest management and agriculture, and is managed by the University of Maine. Since 1935, the Brooklin Garden Club has supported educational projects across the Peninsula, sharing gardening information with its 100-plus members, local communities, and students from area schools. Club members come from Brooklin, Brooksville, Blue Hill, Sedgwick, Sargentville, Deer Isle and Penobscot. Return to the Community News home page. |
