Town Description
Surry is primarily a residential area,
with many people commuting to Ellsworth
and beyond to work. The town has long
stretches of shoreline and miles of lakefront
that have attracted seasonal residents,
increasing the population in summer. The
Surry Opera Company is world-famous, as
was the Surry Playhouse a generation ago.
A town park and nearby walking trails
offer opportunities for recreation for all.
The town has an active community
organization—the Surry Community
Improvement Association—that seeks “to
promote community spirit…and explore
ways to make Surry an even better place to
live.” The Arbutus Grange is one of several
active granges in the area.
One of the original townships surveyed
by David Marsh, Surry was incorporated
in 1803. Transportation difficulties divided
the town into five sections, each with its
own school, church, post office, grange
hall and cemetery. Occupations included
farming, lumbering, woodcutting and fishing;
there were also grist, carding and saw
mills.
