Town Contact Information Town of Penobscot, Municipal Information Town Description Penobscot is a small town with classic rural character and a tiny village area. Its 18 miles of shoreline are along the Bagaduce and Penobscot rivers. The town supports a K-8 elementary school, several churches and a nursing home—the town’s largest single employer. Settled after the French and Indian War and incorporated in 1787, Penobscot was established as a farming community by families with names such as Perkins, Hutchins and Wardwell. Brick production became a significant economic factor in 1807 because of the adaptability of the local clay soil. Leftover bricks can still be seen lining the shore in some parts of town. Shipping, gristmills, knitting mills, peat bogs, ice harvesting, wood fuel and lumber completed the basis for the cyclical, rural-based economy. Town Officials Selectmen Tax Information Property assessed: real estate and some personal property tax on commercial equipment. Tax bills are mailed on July 1 and are due when received. Discount of 2 percent if paid first 30 days. Interest on unpaid bills is 7 percent annually. Rules determined by the state are used to determine property value. Exemptions: homestead and war veterans over the age of 62. If you want to appeal: fill out proper request papers, which may be obtained at the town office, and return them at a selectmen’s meeting, every Tue., at 7 p.m. Tax is calculated: property value times the mill rate.
