Town Description

Isle au Haut has a small but vibrant year-round community, complete with a library, a one-room school with students through eighth grade, and a part-time grocery store. Although it was originally part of the town of Deer Isle, Isle au Haut became a separate town in 1874, and now isn’t even in the same county. Seven miles out from Stonington, the island is accessible by the Isle au Haut mail boat and by private vessel.

More than half its land is taken up with Acadia National Park, which permits camping by reservation and day visitors. The park features wooded hills and walks, a quiet inlet on the Stonington side, and open surf on the “wild” side of the island.

The first summer visitors arrived about 1880. According to the 2000 Census, 131 of the 164 houses on the island are for seasonal or recreational use.
