Town Description

First settled in 1762, and incorporated in 1789, Deer Isle originally encompassed Isle au Haut, which split off in 1874, and Stonington, which split off in 1897. The town now includes the northern two-thirds of the island of Deer Isle and the islands of Little Deer Isle and Sunshine.

Located here are the Island’s two largest public and private employers: the Island’s elementary and high school complex and the nonprofit Island Nursing Home and Care Center, founded in 1975.

The nationally renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is located in Sunshine and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The 400-seat Reach Performing Arts Center, at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, is the site for school and community productions and events.

The town’s 87 miles of beautiful shorefront attracts retirees who build year-round or seasonal homes.
