Town Description

With 53 miles of coastline, Brooksville is well known for boating and kayaking along the Bagaduce River. Also an attraction is the pristine beauty of Holbrook Island Sanctuary, a nature preserve that is part of the state’s parks system. Buck’s Harbor is a yachting center for the area. The last hand-built home of back-to-the-land pioneers, Scott and Helen Nearing, is located here, operated as The Good Life Center.

The town was once five distinct villages, each with post office, school, church and store. Its economy has been variously driven by farming, fishing, copper mining on Cape Rosier, a granite quarry, saw mills, grist mills and tourism. While no longer arriving by steamboat, tourists continue to play a role in the local economy, as does shoreland property development.
