Town Description

Brooklin is famed for its tradition of boat building, both by professionals at the several facilities in town, and by students at the WoodenBoat School who attend summer classes. The town has long been called home by writers, including the late E.B. White and his wife, Katherine, and former Washington Post editor James Russell Wiggins.

The village boasts a general store—truly the center of town and a great source for information—a restaurant, church, inn and town office building. Thousands gather here in the summer for the Flye Point Music and Arts Festival.

With Native American artifacts stemming from the presence of Red Paint People, Abnaki and Woodland tribes, dating as far back as 4,000 years, the area is archeologically important. The town gained a measure of fame when an 11th century Norse coin was discovered in 1957, indicating that Europeans may have traded in the area 500 years before Columbus.
