Box 412, Blue Hill, ME 04614 Municipal Information Town Description Shipbuilding and trading by sea drove Blue Hill’s economy when it was first settled in 1762. Today, the town is known for culture with its fine library, Kneisel Hall chamber music offerings in summer, many artists and galleries, and more. Blue Hill has a semi-public high school and an alternative high school, as well as a public elementary school and a Waldorf-inspired elementary school. Blue Hill also is home to the area’s largest grocery store and has a variety of retail establishments along Main and South streets. This thriving town is also home to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, a critical-access hospital that also anchors a primary health-care network that stretches from Bucksport to Stonington. The hospital is the town’s largest employer. The Hancock County Agricultural Society, established in 1891, sponsors the annual Blue Hill Fair—a self-described “down to earth country fair”—held Labor Day weekend on the fairgrounds. Blue Hill Mountain overlooks the town, and its pathways are well used by residents and visitors—parasailers make use of the updrafts created by the mountain.
