The Sow's Ear Winery
Click here to return to the Seasonal Guide.

BROOKSVILLE—The Sow’s Ear Winery is in its 18th year producing organic wines from locally grown and wild fruits. These are primarily dry table wines, which perfectly complement local Maine cuisine. Try sparkling cider with lobster, rhubarb with salmon, and blueberry with lamb or beef. Wildberry is a semi-sweet blend of apple, blueberry and cranberry—put this one in the picnic basket.

The wines are made in small batches. Hard cider originates in the winery orchard and from selected wild varieties. The rhubarb is grown here too, and the blueberries are purchased locally. The two bubblies—cider and rhubarb—are made by the traditional champagne method. Both are bone dry with a sprightly, clean acidity.

Still available for sale is an interesting collection of art and architectural history books from ancient to modern, with a concentration on medieval, plus some political and social history. Come and browse while sampling wine! Wines are also available locally at The Blue Hill Food Co-op, The Blue Hill Wine Shop and the Belfast Co-op.

The tasting room is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Look for the copper sow sign at the intersection of the Herrick Road with the Coastal Road (Route 176) on the way to South Brooksville, or call Tom Hoey at 326-4649.
