BROOKSVILLE—On July 4, 1889, Innkeeper Jim Littlefield’s ancestors opened their homestead to vacationers seeking to partake of the summer pleasures of a rustic life on the Maine coast. Steaming up Eggemoggin Reach, guests arrived with great enthusiasm at Herrick’s Landing. With steamer trunks packed for a month loaded in the wagon, they walked up the boardwalk to the Oakland House Hotel just in time for a rusticator’s lunch.
The Oakland House Hotel was one of 24 such “Rusticator Destinations” in Brooksville at the turn of the century, yet is just one of two remaining.
In time, the property grew to include the stunning 14-room Arts & Crafts style Shore Oaks Seaside Inn and 15 rustic, comfortable, and artfully appointed cottages.
Fifty expansive coastal acres, amazing dining, and wonderfully appointed accommodations await your adventure.
Today, the Rusticator Restaurant commands prime space in five dining rooms at the old hotel. In the kitchen, what was once a simple wood stove is now a sparkling new battery de cuisine.
There, in a dream union between classic location and inspired cuisine, highly respected Executive Chef Rich Hanson and his wife Cary Hanson of Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro (in Ellsworth) will be creating “food from the place and of the time.” His original interpretations of seasonal New England and American dishes celebrate the bounty from local family-owned farms in Hancock County and the great State of Maine.
